How do you reinforce alignment of purpose, strategy implementation, business understanding, and customer focus within a global organisation with more than 510,000 employees across the globe?

At ISS, a leading global facility services company, a key part of the solution is to utilise gamification and experimental learning. In collaboration with Workz, ISS has designed the ISS Strategy Game; a physical board game which focus on creating awareness and dialogue about the global strategy and business model of the company.

Good games function as “talking pieces” that facilitate meaningful discussions between the participants who get a unique opportunity to share insights and experiences

In the game three teams compete in an open market on how to attract and retain the right portfolio of customers through the delivery of a strong value proposition. The game emphasises the importance of a commercial mindset, strategic alignment, and a deep understanding of the customer’s purpose and needs.

Inspired by the tradition of “Kriegsspiel” from the Prussian army, the simulation allows the participants to explore different options and to learn from meaningful mistakes where the consequences are measured in game pieces and Monopoly money instead of real budgets, customers, and colleagues.

The game materials combine magnetic boards and 3D printed models with physical action cards and game pieces.

"Despite the many benefits of online solutions, ISS treasures the benefits of a physical design where the participants interact face to face in the same room. Good games function as “talking pieces” that facilitate meaningful discussions between the participants who get a unique opportunity to share insights and experiences. The ISS Strategy Game is currently being implemented across the global organisation – from the top management team to talent programmes and local management academies. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive with an average score of 4,89 out of 5" says Christian Lauritzen, Head of Group Learning and Development, ISS

The ISS Strategy Game was honoured with a gold award at the International Serious Play Conference in July 2016.
